Nick Focuses on Issues Important to You

Every child in Pennsylvania should have access to a high-quality education. Our next generation's chance of success cannot depend on the ZIP code where they live. Pennsylvania's courts have ruled that our public school system is unconstitutionally underfunded. This means too many schools don't have the resources our kids need to learn. That is unacceptable. We need a generational investment in education.<ul><li>As a loud advocate in Harrisburg for additional education funding, Nick has supported historic increases in the state budget for our children's education totaling over $52 million in new annual funding and an additional $5.1M in state grants to our school districts in only 4 years as a State Representative.</li><li>Our kids deserve to learn in a safe and nurturing environment. Nick supports Pennsylvania's school safety grant program and his relationships in Harrisburg allow him to advocate for the maximum possible funding to secure our schools.</li><li>Its clear that Pennsylvania needs to offer opportunities for career-bound high school students beyond the college track. Investments in local trade programs and career and technical schools are a must to handle the high demand for such programs and to ensure a pipeline of workers to fill the shortages we see in many industries from nursing, to construction, to cosmetology, and more. Nick led a bipartisan group of state elected officials to secure a $4,000,000 state grant for the Steel Center for Career and Technical Education school in 2023 and supported a $30 million investment in technical schools in the state's 2024 budget.</li><li>Western Pennsylvania used to be an exporter of newly-trained teachers, but now there is a critical shortage of education professionals. Nick has supported programs to help train new educators, provide stipends to student teachers, increase funding for state system universities to make it more affordable for teachers to get their degree, and more. We need to ensure educators can get trained, stay in the classroom, and teach our kids for their future success.</li><li>Years of Republican education cuts have underfunded our schools and overtaxed our local property owners. The state needs to contribute its share of funding public education to stop local property tax increases. Nick voted every year to inject more state funding for education into the state budget.</li></ul>As our next State Senator, Nick will support Governor Shapiro's plan to continually invest in our Pennsylvania's educational system including historic investments in special education, school-based mental health programs, school safety, school building upgrades, and more.

Good Schools

Every Pennsylvanian deserves to feel safe in their community. Threats to public safety are complex, but the state has a number of responsibilities to provide safety in our neighborhoods.<ul><li>Fully funding our police, fire, and EMS agencies is of paramount responsibility to ensuring that every city, borough, and township in Allegheny County has well-funded first responders. As a state representative, Nick has advocated for additional funding for local first responders and delivered $1.8 million in grant funding for local volunteer fire companies, EMS agencies, and police departments. He voted for legislation in Harrisburg that supports our first responders by expanding PTSD healthcare, increasing funding for 911 services, increasing the state police officer cap, establishing an urban search and rescue in western Pennsylvania, and investing an additional $30 million in grants for local fire fighters and EMS. Nick is honored to have the endorsement of local first responders including the Pittsburgh Fire Fighters, McKeesport Fire Fighters, Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighter Association, the Allegheny County Constables Association, and Teamsters Local 205 representing local police officers including 22 police departments in the 45th district.</li><li>In addition to mental health programing in schools, we need to invest in adult mental health programs. Nick supported state budget investments in adult mental health programs and believes we need to do more to invest in these types of services.</li><li>One of the biggest challenges we face is that not enough Pennsylvanians are entering public safety careers to replace those retiring and to meet expanded demand. There are too many barriers, including inadequate pay and workplace safety, to careers like policing, EMS, nursing, fire fighters, social work, and more that make it too hard for young people interested in those lines of work to enter those fields. Nick has supported a number of bills that help tear down these barriers to make it easier for those called to protect us all to choose those careers, provide for their families, and stay safe.</li><li>Many communities in Allegheny County face significant issues with remediating old, dilapidated, blighted buildings that are extremely costly to tear down and largely abandoned. This blight creates unsafe situations every day and prevents economic redevelopment and most communities don't have the financial resources to clear the blight to start the process of reinvestment. In Harrisburg, Nick has been a loud advocate for community revitalization programs, blight remediation, and state redevelopment funding to supplement local and private investments in making our communities safer.</li><li>State investments in child care programs, recreation programs, and after school programs are necessary to ensure that our children have safe places to learn, play, and grow up. Nick is a proponent of expanding funding for these types of programs to make child care more affordable and expand the number of facilities available to families. He also proudly voted in favor of increasing the state's child dependent tax credit which tripled the amounts returned to families across Pennsylvania.</li></ul>In the state Senate, Nick will continue to vocally support our first responders, vote to expand access for mental health programing, drive state funding back to Allegheny County for blight remediation and community revitalization, and create better programs that invest in care for our children.

Every Pennsylvanian should feel safe in their community. We need programs that invest in mental health, fight blight, invest in childcare programs, and fully fund our police, fire, and EMS first responders to create the safest communities possible.

Safe Communities

Nick's family has had the opportunity to succeed here in Allegheny County for over 160 years and he feels strongly that the next generation should have access to the same success as prior generations, but we need the local economy to thrive so that our children can stay here to raise their families with good-paying jobs.<ul><li>Growing our local economy to create good paying jobs here in our corner of Allegheny County has been a top priority since Nick's first election to the state House. He has worked with local small businesses, the Chamber of Commerce, building trades unions, state agencies, and other development stakeholders to grow our economy and create jobs. Nick has hosted the Secretary of the Department of Economic and Community Development for a small business tour, participated in local Chamber of commerce legislative panels, highlighted local businesses and more to use his position to support our local economy.</li><li>Driving economic development in our community is key to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to succeed here. After years of coordination during which Nick has been heavily involved, we finally see progress on redeveloping Century 3 Mall. In his role as Allegheny County Delegation Chair, he was active in preserving the Monroeville Convention Center as an economic driver for our region. Nick's relationships in Harrisburg and throughout Allegheny County help him bring back resources and investments to our communities.</li><li>Ensuring the economy works for everyone and is fair, Nick has championed first-of-its-kind legislation to fight back against attacks on your personal finances. His "Pay the Price You See" bill cracks down on the fees charged during online purchases for event tickets, vacation rentals, and more so that you don't get ripped off. Nick has also championed the Pennsylvania Open Markets Act which would protect small businesses, workers, and consumers by giving the Attorney General the tools needed to protect Pennsylvanians and bring back billions in restitution from companies that break the law.</li><li>Every Pennsylvanian at some point will require medical treatment so ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare is an important part of creating economic opportunity. Too often a surprise medical bill for something as small as a broken bone can bankrupt families overnight. Nick sponsored the Pennsylvania Medical Debt Repayment Program to help deal with the crushing burden of medical debts. He has also supported legislation to triple the Child Care Tax Credit, address the home health care workforce to ensure we have more available workers to help with medical needs, the Patient Safety Act to secure safe staffing in hospitals, as well as bills that expand rural healthcare, telemedicine, dental coverage, and more.</li><li>Investing in our local infrastructure is imperative to growing our economy. Of course we need to invest in roads and bridges, but also sewer infrastructure, river access, internet service, and water treatment operations. The Mon-Fayette Expressway will connect the Mon Valley to the broader regional transportation network, creating economic growth. During his time in Harrisburg, Nick has worked with all the involved parties to ensure that our local infrastructure is fully funded with maintenance completed on time and upgrades are completed ahead of schedule.</li><li>As a board member of Pittsburgh Regional Transit, Nick advocated for increased funding from the state budget to expand public transit in underserved parts of Allegheny County.</li></ul>As your next state Senator, Nick will continue to champion investments in our local economy to grow the available jobs and ensure that economic opportunities are available for the next generation.

We need economic growth in our region that creates jobs and promises opportunity for the next generation to live and work here. Investments in critical infrastructure, economic development, reliable public transit, and fair economic treatment is crucial for our future success.

Economic Opportunity

Nick is an ardent protector of your fundamental freedoms in Harrisburg and will continue to fight for your rights in the state Senate.<ul><li>Nick will protect women's rights and access to reproductive healthcare to ensure that state government stays out of your private medical decisions. He is also a founding member of the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus to focus on the maternal mortality and morbidity issues which are far too common for women across Pennsylvania. Nick has voted many times for parts of the Momnibus bill package sending several measures to protect mothers to the Senate.</li><li>Every American adult has the fundamental right to vote and Nick believes that voting should to be convenient, accessible, and secure. In Harrisburg, he has voted to make improvements to our election system that adhere to those three goals so that every Pennsylvanian can participate in our Republic including expanding opportunities to vote and helping counties count votes faster on Election Day.</li><li>Nick has been one of the foremost advocates for workers' rights during his time in Harrisburg. As an active member of the House Labor &amp; Industry committee, Nick has passed a number of significant pro-worker bills through the House of Representatives including protections for hotel workers, direct deposit for workers compensation, and an amendment to the constitution that protects workers' rights. He has also worked to ensure that the workers that he represents have easy access to government services like workers compensation and unemployment compensation, safe workplaces, employment opportunities, and more. Nick also serves as the Chair of the Policy Committee's Subcommittee on Labor, Energy, and Development which has hosted public hearings across Pennsylvania on labor rights and protections.</li></ul>As a state Senator, Nick will continue to fight to protect your rights from those in Harrisburg who seek to deprive you of your fundamental freedoms.

We need to stand up to defend fundamental rights that are too often under attack in Harrisburg. Protecting the right to vote in free and fair elections, guaranteeing healthcare and reproductive rights, and expanding workers' rights are all critical to the future of Pennsylvania.

As a state Representative, Nick manages one of the top-ranked local constituent offices in the entire state. He and his team resolve with over 14,000 issues annually connecting constituents directly with government services you deserve.<ul><li>Nick's office hosts service agents from the American Legion to provide private, 1-on-1, and free veteran services to those who served our country.</li><li>Senior bus passes are available at Nick's district office to provide easy and convenient access to our public transit system for senior citizens.</li><li>Every year, Nick's district office hosts AARP volunteers to assist senior citizens file their tax returns for free and assists with filing for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program thereby saving senior citizens the cost of tax preparation while also putting money back into their pockets for those eligible for the PTRR program.</li><li>Nick's team are experts in resolving unemployment compensation issues and his staff helps Pennsylvanians from all corners of the state access the benefits they deserve.</li><li>Thousands of PennDOT requests are processed and expedited by Nick's staff every year to ensure quick and accurate service for the public.</li><li>Nick's district office offers free notarization services to the public for non-financial documents.</li><li>Nick hosts free events across the region including ice cream socials, a shredding event, a senior citizen fair, a license place replacement event, and more.</li><li>As the self-described "traffic cop" for navigating government, Nick's office is the first call for countless issues related to local, county, and federal government issues in addition to direct state government assistance.</li></ul>As your next state Senator, Nick will continue to offer the best possible constituent service while expanding programs into all corners of the areas he represents so that you have a friendly voice eager to help solve your problem or answer your question every time you call or come to the office.

<h2>Fighting for the Future of Allegheny County</h2>In the borough of Dravosburg, there is a headstone marking the final resting place of Robert E. Thomas. He was born in Wales and emigrated to the United States before the Civil War, like so many others, in search of a better life. He worked, married, raised a family of 10 kids, died, and was buried in the Monongahela Valley of Allegheny County in 1877.He was my great-great-great-grandfather and since his courageous decision to leave his childhood home to create a new home here in Southwestern Pennsylvania, my family has been fortunate to grow and prosper in Allegheny County for over 160 years. Subsequent generations have grown up with the same optimism of a Welsh immigrant since he originally immigrated here - believing that Allegheny County offers a chance for success, stability, and a better life for their children. Many of my family found the American Dream here, which is why Robert Thomas's gravesite is less than 3 miles away from my family's front door today, more than a century and a half later.I decided to enter public service because I wanted to make sure that families like mine and yours have the same opportunities for a good life here in Allegheny County. I was blessed to grow up here and start a family with my wife Molly and son Nico surrounded by my extended family tree because there was opportunity for those willing to work hard. Fighting for good schools, safe communities, and the chance for every single Pennsylvanian to create a great life is my mission while serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.During my time in the state House, I've been a champion for standing up for the needs of working families while making sure Allegheny County gets our fair share of state resources for local parks, job creation, economic development, first responders, senior citizens, and more. Nick Pisciottano released the following statement:&nbsp;I want to commend the hard work of local, county, and state officials who worked diligently to ensure that Monroeville retains its convention center, which attracts thousands of visitors to Allegheny County every year and drives millions of dollars in economic development in our region. Since the announcement on February 12 that the Monroeville Convention Center would close, there has rightly been concern how that would impact Monroville and the surrounding communities.In my capacity as the chair of the Allegheny County House Delegation, I have been in contact with the involved officials to support their efforts in preserving the Monroeville Convention Center. Through the diligent efforts of Monroeville Mayor Nick Gresock, the Monroeville Council, Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, county executive Sara Innamorato, state Rep. Brandon Markosek, state Sen. Jay Costa, state Sen. Jim Brewster, County Councilwoman Michelle Nacarrati-Chapkis, Visit Monroeville, and others an agreement has been worked out to continue the operation of the Monroeville Convention Center. I also extend my appreciation to those at Oxford Development who worked with the community to find a solution.This process is an example of how leaders should lead in our region: rather than making public statements to attribute blame, our elected officials rolled up their sleeves and collaborated to address the issue. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEState Representative Nick Pisciottano Running for State Senate&nbsp;Allegheny County, PA -- Today, state Representative Nick Pisciottano (D-West Mifflin) announced he’s running for the Pennsylvania State Senate to succeed retiring state Senator Jim Brewster.&nbsp;“My family has called the Mon Valley home since before the Civil War. I went into public service&nbsp; to make sure the next generation has the opportunity to succeed here like I did. That means good schools for every kid, safe communities, and good jobs that pay a fair wage. That’s what I fight for in the state House and I want to take that fight to the state Senate,” said Rep. Pisciottano.“During my time in the state House, I’ve been a champion for working families and fought to make sure Allegheny County gets our fair share of state resources for local parks, job creation, older residents, and our fire, EMS, and police departments. I’m also proud of how my office cuts through the red tape to deliver services to thousands of families in our area and make government more accessible for everyone so that you can get the help and the benefits you deserve,” Pisciottano said announcing his candidacy.Pisciottano is a lifelong resident of Allegheny County who graduated as valedictorian from West Mifflin Area High School before earning degrees at Washington &amp; JeffersonCollege and Johns Hopkins University. Nick lives in West Mifflin on the same street where he grew up with his wife Molly and 2-year-old son Nico. After working as an auditor and certified public accountant for nearly a decade, Nick was first elected to the state House in November 2020 and was re-elected unopposed to a second term in 2022.As a member of the House of Representatives, Pisciottano has passed more bills than any other member this term. He’s a vocal advocate for working families, serving on the House Labor &amp; Industry committee and the House Consumer Protection committee. In addition, he serves on the influential House Transportation committee and represents the House Democratic Caucus on Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s Board of Directors. In 2022, Pisciottano was unanimously elected to chair the 16-member Allegheny County House Democratic Delegation succeeding former state Rep. and current Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis.Senator Jim Brewster endorsed Pisciottano to succeed him as senator for the 45th Senatorial District by saying, “I’ve worked with many devoted public servants during my career and Rep.
